BREAKING: AWIHF Shortlisted for the National Social Enterprise Awards 2026!
Gulu City, Northern Uganda. A moment of immense pride has arrived for Acholi Women in Health Foundation (AWIHF). We are thrilled and deeply honoured to announce that AWIHF has been officially shortlisted for the 3rd Edition of the Social Enterprise Awards 2026, hosted by the Federation of Uganda Social Enterprises (FUSE), under the prestigious Health and Social Care Social Enterprise of the Year category.
This recognition places AWIHF among an elite circle of organisations transforming lives across Uganda's social enterprise landscape, and it stands as powerful validation of the tireless, grassroots work our team has poured into the Acholi sub-region since our founding in 2023.
Why This Matters
AWIHF was founded to address the persistent and disproportionate health challenges facing women and girls in the post-conflict Acholi sub-region of Northern Uganda. Our mission is to close the gaps left behind by two decades of insurgency, guided by a simple belief: when women are empowered to lead, innovate, and deliver high-quality care, the entire community thrives.
That mission comes alive through our core programme areas:
- Maternal and Reproductive Health, delivering safe motherhood care, antenatal services, family planning, and cervical cancer awareness across the region.
- Mental Health and Trauma Support, offering community-based psychosocial support, healing circles, and peer networks for sickle cell disease warriors and women navigating trauma.
- Community Health Education, running school health sessions, menstrual hygiene management, and peer education that empowers adolescent girls.
- Healthcare Systems Strengthening, equipping Village Health Teams and building stronger emergency referral coordination between facilities.
- School and Community Outreach, bringing integrated frontline medical camps, screenings, and diagnostic education directly to underserved rural communities.
- Mentorship, connecting medical and nursing students nationwide with clinical mentors to build the next generation of women-led health leadership.
Since our official launch at Gulu University Library Hall in July 2026, graced by Deputy IGG Dr. Patricia Acan Okiria and Ministry of Health Commissioner for Non-Communicable Diseases Oyoo Charles Akiya, AWIHF has reached over 1,000 households through the Patiko Medical Outreach alone, equipped more than 50 healthcare students through our mentorship pipeline, and completed multiple structured phases of programming across the Acholi sub-region.
This nomination is proof that this mission is being seen, felt, and celebrated far beyond our community. Being shortlisted alongside respected names in the Health and Social Care category is no small feat. It reflects the trust our beneficiaries have placed in us, the dedication of our volunteers and staff, and the belief of our partners that community-driven healthcare solutions can, and do, change lives.
